Chasing the target of 149, Islamabad United were able to finish off things in style as Sam Billings scored one of the best knocks in PSL so far and gave his side a victory over Quetta Gladiators.
Sam Billings was declared man of the match for his marvelous performance.
Earlier, in the 7th match of Pakistan Super League 2017 on Wednesday in Sharjah, it was the defending champion Islamabad United that had to clash against the mighty Quetta Gladiatirors, reported Dunya News.

Islamabad United Innings
Over 19.1 I Score 149/5 I Shadab Khan 0*, SW Billings 78*
Islamabad United needed 39 runs of the last 5 overs with seven wickets in hand. To everyone’s surprise when Islamabad United’s batsmen were playing so aggressively, only 3 runs were scored of Muhammad Nawaz over. He bowled exceptionally well while conceding less runs at this stage of the match. Sam Billings pulled one for a six in Anwar Ali’s over and managed to lessen the gap between balls and runs.
It was in the 18th over of the innings when Watson took on Perera while hitting two fours and one six consecutively in three balls while creating frustration for Quetta Gladiators. However, everyone had their heart racing when Watson was caught at leg stump boundary as he tried to clear the fence.
With two overs left in the game, only 13 runs were what United needed to win the match. Billings finished off things in style as he hits a boundary of the very first ball of the last over and played what should be called as one of the best innings in PSL history so far.

In the very first over after the half-way, Misbah-ul-Haq played a nice sweep for four more as he seemed in fine touch. However, things changed all of a sudden as he was trapped leg before wicket by the promising slow lefty Hasan Khan. The introduction of Shane Watson to the wicket brought an aggression in the United innings as both Billings and Watson take on the spinners and fast bowlers equally and hit massively all across the wicket. Billings hit straight over the bowler’s head for six in the thirteenth over while Watson hit two consecutive boundaries in Umar Gul’s over that was 14th of the innings. 16 runs came of the 15th over by Perera.
Over 10 I Score 67/2 I Misbah-ul-Haq 6*, SW Billings 38*
The introduction of slow left-arm orthodox spinners Hasan Khan and Muhammad Nawaz into the attack immediately after the first five overs turned out to be a turned out to be a useful move by the skipper. Both the spinners were not only able to stop the flow of runs but also managed to take wickets and creating frustrations for Islamabad United as a result. Smith was cleaned up by Muhammad Nawaz and Haddin stumped by Sarfaraz of the bowling Muhammad Nawaz as well. The two wickets falling at quick succession one after another and created a bit of worries for United. In the 10th over, Misbah-ul-Haq hit a brilliant boundary and looked in mood to lead the successful chase.
Over 5 I Score 34/0 I SW Billings 26*, Brad Haddin 0*
The first over of Islamabad United innings was a good one as Anwar Ali was able to hit the right areas of the match and conceded only four runs in the over. It was in Umar Gul’s second over that Sam Billings started to bring some pace in the game as he scored two boundaries of the first and third ball of the over. However, Anwar Ali continued with his impressive bowling as only 2 runs were scored of his second over. Parera was brought by the skipper in the fourth over and he bowled really smart while conceding just 4 runs in the fourth over.
However, the fifth over of the innings and third over from Anwar Ali was completely different from his first two overs. Billings took the charge and scored three boundaries in the over. Hence apparently impressive figures so far were spoiled by Sam Billings.
Quetta Gladiators Innings
Over 20 I Score 148/6 I Perera 27, Mahmudullah 29*
The strategic time-out turned out to be a beneficial one for Islamabad as Asad Shafiq was cleaned up by Shane Watson on the very first ball after the break. Parera looked aggressive at the very outset of his innings as he hits a huge six on the fourth ball of the 16th over. On the very first ball of the next over by Sami, a yorker edged past Haddin’s left for four more. Mahmudullah also joins the party as he smeared over a delivery from Ruman Raees for a six.
Mahmudullah managed to hit an impressive shot for four of the last ball of penultimate over by Sami. On the first ball of the last over of the innings bowled by Rumman Raees, Parera played a brilliant shot over point for four. On the last ball of the innings, Parera got run out in the process of taking a single.

Shadab Khan bowled an impressive over when he gave away only 5 runs in the 11th over. This guy has bowled really well so far as he conceded only 15 runs in his 3 overs. However, the batsman of Quetta Gladiators saw a chance once the left arm spin bowler Zohaib Khan was introduced into the attack. The skipper hit a huge shot for six as he demonstrated his favorite slog-sweep. Moreover, Asad Shafiq shot for four more managed to fetch 13 runs of the over.
The skipper soon departs after a brief contribution of 12 runs to the score board as he was caught by Haddin of the bowling of lefty Ruman Raees.
The new batsman Mahmudullah managed to fetch a boundary as a top edge went for four more over the keeper’s head. In addition, Quetta Gladiators were also able to reach 100 runs in the 15th over with Asad Shafiq still on the crease alongside Mahmudullah. Time for the strategic time-out.
Over 10 I Score 67/3 I Asad Shafiq 33*, Sarfraz Ahmad 1*
As Asad Shafiq and Rossouw carried on the innings after the two wickets falling one after another in Sami’s over, the strike was rotated at regular intervals. The introduction of Watson by the skipper didn’t prove to be that effective as Asad Shafiq managed to hit two boundaries in his over. In Shahdab Khan’s over, a golden stumping chance was missed by Islamabad’s wicketkeeper Brad Haddin as he failed to grab the ball in his hands and missing the stump as a result.
Watson was able to provide the crucial breakthrough in the 10th over the match when he removed Rossouw of his bowling as the batsman handed over an easy catch to Ruman Raees. At half-way, the gladiators were 67 for the loss of three wickets as all the dangerous hitters i.e. Ahmad Shahzad, KP and Rossouw were back in the pavilion. The skipper comes into play to join Asad Shafiq.
Over 5 I Score 37/2 I Asad Shafiq 10*, RR Rossouw 0*
The aggressive opener Ahmad Shahzad started the proceeding at a fast pace from the Quetta side as he played magnificent around the wicket and provided a flying start to his side. On the second ball of the match, an iside edge of Ahmad Shahzad’s bat went away for four. As Muhammad Sami comes into ball in the second over, Ahmad Shahzad played a good-length ball for a superb six. A glorious drive by Ahmad Shahzad in the third over bowled by Irfan managed to fetch four more for the batsman. The same result came when Ahmad Shahzad played a stylish drive on the last ball of the same over.
On the last ball of the fourth over by Ruman Raees, Asad Shafiq hits his first boundary.
The second over by Sami and fifth over of the Quetta innings turned out to be a useful one for Islamabad United as Ahmad Shahzad and the dangerous KP got out on the first two deliveries of the over. The aggressive start was slowed down by Sami in his second over.
